My Biography...

I was born in Etobicoke, Ontario and from an early age had a strong connection to Norval Morrisseau's Woodlands style. I began to study his work in depth from about the age of 15. Soon after I travelled back to my roots in Northern Ontario, and believe the Creator brought me together with Norval and some of his close family. At the age of 17 I spent time with Norval. He spoke to me about his art, and how colors heal people. He also spoke of his travels to the house of invention. He told me when he went there in his dreams, he would always see two of his pieces there, and they were always in black and white. Whenever he woke he would always remember those pieces. He said it was this realm that he was able to put colour in those pieces. I was incredibly inspired by him, (I found him quite fascinating, until 2022 when I began to learn things about him that made me realize he was not someone worthy of looking up to, and I will never see him or his art the same again.) That made me realize there are many amazing woodland artists to look up to. Daphne Odjig, Jay Bell Redbird, Mark Anthony Jacobson, Jackson Beardy, Roy Thomas..just to name a few. Those are all people who learned the woodland style, ran with their brushes in an honorable way, and created some of the most beautiful work I have ever seen. After moving to North Vancouver in 1991 some years passed but my connection with woodland art stayed strong. Around 2003, Norval's nephew decided that I too was being called to paint this amazing style. He said, "Jason, I can see you were meant to be an artist and I believe one day you will surpass me in this." I was very honoured and laughed because I was not sure I had the talent to paint. That was 30 years ago. A few years later, Norval came to me in two very powerful dreams. He stood behind me as I painted and was giving direction and guidance to both his nephew and I. I awoke and knew in my heart that it was time to pick up the paint brush again. Ever since, I have been painting with beautiful bright colours in the style that was taught to me. My inspiration and strong desire is to bring healing and joy through colorful images, passing on teachings and stories that have been passed to me.
